a 600 series derailleur will work with any shimano shifters. I run a Light Action Road derailleur (even before the 600 series) with a XT shifter and it works great

The only thing I could really say is put it on the side where it fits best. I would really have to see it to judge on what could be done though.

Its really up to you depending on how you want the controls. Its normally shifter and then brake. Some fit together better than others. For instance I have an old X9 shifter pod and Ultimate brakes which don't really work well together.

Sorry was away for TG this weekend. To answer your question not sure. I ran a front 5.1 all year and have had nothing but good luck with it. Switch the wheelset between my dh and trail bike, so its seen extremes in a variety of styles. Got a rear one for the trail bike in August and don't really have enough time on it. Planning on getting a rear 5.1 on the dh bike too during the off season. Some consider them to b a little soft (not nearly as bad as the 6.1) and others consider them great rims. Good luck with whatever you choose.

xt cranks are fine it will take a bit to break them infact quite alot and the rims are fine aswell not the strongest but they should last a descent amount of time unless you hang up on something huge really hard

Ha, no not yet. To be honest really haven't been down there much. Between Blue, the rain, or just trail riding I think I've only spent about 15 minutes at the jumps.
